Rhabdomyolysis induced by a single dose of a statin.

چکیده
Statins have been shown to cause myotoxicity and rhabdomyolysis. In most cases rhabdomyolysis occurs following the use of these drugs for at least one week. A case of rhabdomyolysis after just a single dose of simvastatin is reported.

Statin-induced myopathies.
Statins are considered to be safe, well tolerated and the most efficient drugs for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, one of the main risk factor for atherosclerosis, and therefore they are frequently prescribed medications. The most severe adverse effect of statins is myotoxicity, in the form of myopathy, myalgia, myositis or rhabdomyolysis. Clinical trials commonly define statin toxicity ...
متن کاملStatin-induced rhabdomyolysis: a complication of a commonly overlooked drug interaction
Rhabdomyolysis is a well-documented side effect of statin therapy. This risk is increased with concurrent use of medications that inhibit cytochrome p450-3A4 (CYP3A4), such as macrolide antibiotics. We present the case of a 67-year-old patient who was commenced on clarithromycin on a background of simvastatin therapy, resulting in rhabdomyolysis. This case highlights the need for awareness of c...
متن کاملTicagrelor Leads to Statin-Induced Rhabdomyolysis: A Case Report
BACKGROUND Following acute coronary intervention in cardiology patients, the combined medical therapy with the platelet inhibitory drug ticagrelor and a statin medication (e.g., simvastatin) is recommended according to international guidelines. Yet combined therapeutic regimens have the potential of pharmacological interaction with both ticagrelor and simvastatin being metabolized by CYP3A4. Rh...
متن کاملColchicine triggered severe rhabdomyolysis after long-term low-dose simvastatin therapy: a case report
BACKGROUND Rhabdomyolysis is a widely recognized yet rare complication in statin use. Rhabdomyolysis might be triggered by the prescription of high doses of statins or by statin accumulation due to interactions with concomitant medication. Muscle cell destruction as evidenced by myoglobin elevation can induce potentially life-threatening acute renal failure. CASE PRESENTATION We report a case...
متن کاملRhabdomyolysis in the setting of induced hypothyroidism and statin therapy: a case report.
Mild elevation of creatine kinase (CK) is common in untreated hypothyroidism, but severe myositis and overt rhabdomyolysis are rare. Similarly, muscle pain and CK elevation are potential side effects of statin therapy, yet rhabdomyolysis is likewise rare in the absence of medication interactions adversely affecting statin metabolism. The coexistence of statin therapy and hypothyroid states may ...
